Lightning and Thunderstorms

When lightning strikes, keeping everyone safe is our priority.

A Field Supervisor (or other appointed person) at each activity monitors the weather for lightning strikes and detects their distance from the facility.

Lightning occurring 8 miles or less from the site of the activity will initiate a lightning warning. All activity will cease and everyone should seek appropriate shelter.

A full explanation of procedures relating to severe storm activity can be found in the  Terrebonne Parish Recreation Lightning Protocol

Where can I find shelter?

Seek out fully enclosed buildings with wiring and plumbing, like schools, field houses, libraries, or homes. If there is no other shelter around, a fully enclosed metal vehicle like a school bus, hardtop car, or van can also be used.
Avoid open areas like tents, dugouts, refreshment stands, gazebos, screened porches, press boxes, open garages, and open canopied areas. Tall objects and elevated areas are potential lightning targets and should also be avoided.

How long until games resume?

Activities are suspended until 30 minutes after the last strike of lightning within an 8 mile radius.
